Summary
Background: Design Project 1 began with understanding the problems associated with ostomy appliances through physically asking and listening to ostomy patients, to clarify the given patient case. Our patient had an ileostomy and a high output which is why they would connect to overnight collection bag. However the user would wake up with a clogged tube and full pouch in the morning which would take 10-20 minutes to clean with their busy schedule.
Role:Admin
- submitting all documents
- keeping all files and photos
- creating the design history file
- setting up additional meetings
- creating a final Gantt chart.
*Gave me the opportunity to refresh my skills in Microsoft applications and organization.
Brainstorming/Designing: I proposed the idea of inserting a thin lining of plastic inside the tube in the night which is then tied on both ends which would then be thrown in the morning if clogged. Everyone in my group gave feedback to each other, and decided to move on with my idea. As a group we created a prototype, and filmed a video to describe the device.

Presentation: We then created a single slideshow, and presented our medical device individually. The presentation was done without any aids. Despite being burdened with other courses, and with limited time to prepare I was able to become more confident in speaking.

Overall, design project 1 gave me the opportunity to carry out administration tasks, take notes, prepare insightful questions, present, and learn about different types of ostomies.
